DTS - Developmental Tracking System
Created By
Mike Rutledge, Darren Ward and Randy Wilk
In September of 2004, Swim Ontario introduced the Long Term Athlete
Development Strategy (LTADS). The philosophy of LTADS is to encourage
young athletes to develop all four competitive strokes equally along with
a strong emphasis on the aerobic development of the athlete. The
parameters of LTADS discourage stroke specialization at a young age, but
allow for athletes to move toward stroke specialization as they become
more senior swimmers.
In reaction to the LTADS, Mike Rutledge and Darren Ward created the
Developmental Tracking System (DTS). The DTS is a scoring mechanism that
supports Swim Ontario's LTADS. Using the International Points Score (IPS)
developed by Nick Theory and used by Federation International Natation
Amateur (FINA), the world governing body of swimming, we scored each
stroke as well as an individual medley and a distance free event for a
total of six scored categories. The total score is divided by the number
of categories scored and that gives us the athletes DTS score. If no score
can be obtained for any one category the athlete will receive a
"0" for that category. Since the DTS score is derived from six
categories, this will make it challenging for the swimmer to do well in
the overall score.
Once a DTS score is obtained for the athlete we can use the score to
rank swimmers as well as track their development. This type of ranking
will favor more senior swimmers and therefore a more precise breakdown and
comparative analysis will be required for a true ranking.
For example: The Mississauga Aquatic Club 2005 Team Champs Team was
selected using the swimmers DTS scores along with a comparative analysis
of the results from Division I Team Champs results from 2004.
Further review of the scores will also allow coaches and staff to
identify strengths and weaknesses in program development and allow for
coaches to create self evaluation procedures.
The DTS was developed during the 2004/2005 swim season. It was
developed for use by the Mississauga Aquatic Club for the purpose of
evaluating swimmer development over time.

TEAM CHAMPS SELECTION
The Ontario Team Champs is held once a year. Clubs are ranked in
divisions one, two, or three. Division one is the highest. Each division
will have a meet all held on the same weekend. Last year MSSAC competed
division two and won, moving us to division one. The lowest two teams from
last year's competition are now moved down to division two. This year we
will compete in division one. In division one, teams are allowed to select
40 members of their club to represent them at the meet. We will be
following the team selection process outlined below.
Selection Process
17& Over Selection
1) All 17&Over swimmers will be selected by the head coach based on
performance and leadership ability. Swimmers currently swimming as part of
the club as well as club members currently swimming for University teams
will be eligible for selection. There will be a maximum number of 8
swimmers to be selected in this category and a minimum of zero.
16&Under Selection
1) DTS (Developmental Tracking System)
i. Swimmers who rank top 40 overall and rank top 4 in their age group in
the clubs DTS ranking will automatically be selected to the team. Swimmers
must be ranked in both the top 40 overall and the top 4 in their age
group, not one or the other.
2) Relays
i. Relays score double points and therefore are important for team
placing. The second selection will be based on relay strength with one
relay team per event. Swimmers selected here will be selected based on
their ability to help field the strongest relay possible.
3) If there are spots available after Selection 1 and 2, the remaining
spots will be filled by the next highest ranked swimmer until all 40 spots
are filled.
4) Alternates will be selected under the same criteria.
